Monsignor Joseph Slinger

Rev. Msgr. Joseph Slinger, a native of Garfield, New Jersey, was ordained in 1970, after completing studies at Immaculate Conception Seminary. He earned a degree in theology at Catholic University in 1970, a master's degree in sociology from Fordham University in 1973 and a doctorate in sociology from Fordham in 1977. While serving as a weekend assistant at Holy Family Parish in Nutley he was professor and chair of sociology, criminal justice and anthropology and for a number of years, Associate Prvost at Seton Hall University. He left the university in 1985 to assume the pastorate of St. Paul the Apostle Church in Jersey City and then served as pastor of Holy Trinity, Hackensack, and later St. Peter in Belleville before he took up residence in the Cathedral rectory in Newark. Archbishop and Cardinal McCarrick appointed him Vicar General for the Apostolates in 1994; the year Pope John Paul II named him Prelate of Honor to His Holiness with the title of monsignor. In 1999, Msgr. Slinger was appointed Vicar General for Human Services for the Archdiocese of Newark. Presently, he serves the Archdiocese as the Archbishop's Liaison to Cathedral Health, on a number of other Archdiocesan Boards and as Pastor of Our lady of the Visitation Parish in Paramus since 1999.
