Sr. Philomena’s

Notes

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK opened Sunday, January 29th.  FAITH, ACADEMICS, SERVICE is the crux of education in the Catholic School system.  These goals have been part of the fabric of Catholic education since the early settlers and the founding of this nation.

The peak period for Catholic Schools in the fifties and sixties paralleled the peak period for religious women and men whose original service was focused on the immigrant populations to the New World.  Their success perpetuated the system and motivated developments for the elementary as well as high schools and colleges that continue to exist and be effective to this day.

Today we find a different picture. With the diminishment of religious communities, an increase of dedicated and qualified women and men who are not sisters, brothers or priests are called to serve in a Faith centered educational system.  Their response continues the work begun so many years ago and their dedication produces academic excellence, faith filled persons with strength of character and high goals for success that marks the Catholic School graduates.

Faith development is a prime goal of Catholic Education but Catholic Schools go beyond by helping the students to have a personal relationship with God.  In addition to formal prayer, celebration of the Eucharist, reception of the sacraments, practices of Advent, Lent and May devotions, the child from Pre-K to young adult is led to see how God works in their lives and the lives of others.  They are called to see God in the everyday events of life.

Academic achievement is a high priority and its success is evident in the number of students who are accepted to the high schools of their choice and eventually to their selected colleges. Visitation Academy is noted for the caliber of its students, often high schools vie for their registrations.

Service is a third theme we celebrate this week.  Catholic School students are outstanding in their response with regard to the  support of local and foreign missions, food and clothing collections for the needy and emergency funding to name a few.

Catholic Schools receive the mandate, the right and most importantly the freedom to praise, bless and celebrate their religious birthright regardless of their faith foundation.  Other Christians as well as non-Christians join the Catholic population so that their children, too, develop character, achieve academically and serve their brothers and sisters in need.

These ideals, Faith, Academics and Service are a work in progress.  Respect for each person is a primary outgrow of faith development and also a work in progress.  Such formation has enabled the Catholic School system to address the recent focus on bullying prior to the recent mandates and to raise the goals for mutual respect to a higher level.

The Arts also play an important part in the Catholic school tradition.  Music and Art are part of the major curriculum.  After school programs are provided for those who wish to become instrumentalists.  Other “After School Programs’ include drama, self defense, cooking, after care, tutoring, homework and study clubs.

Spiritual and financial support from the three parishes, Annunciation, Our Lady of the Visitation and Sacred Heart keep Visitation alive and vibrant.  Many parishioners, grandparents, aunts, uncles, friends promote the mission and philosophy of the school through their words and examples.  Financial support in terms of donations to our Tuition Angel Program and a parish assessment to the school assist in keeping an affordable tuition.    Many have children who are alumni and they too visibly demonstrate the fruits of their experiences at Visitation Academy.

We take this opportunity to thank all of you for being a role model for our students.  Your support provides a real-life example of how a faith community can make a difference. During this week come and see our teachers and students in action.  Realize that Catholic Education is preparing for the future by educating for a way of life in a Christ centered environment.

Rainbows Begins Second Session

Sometimes very sad things happen in a family.  A divorce or a death can take place.  In either case, a lot of changes take place for a child in these families.

Our Lady of the Visitation Parish will begin its second session on Tuesday, February 7.  “Rainbow’s for All God’s Children”, is a peer support group program for children who have experienced the death or divorce of parents.

If you would like to know more about this program or enroll your child/children, please call Barbara D’Arrigo at 201-265-3812.

Catholics may have accurate or inaccurate information or impressions about Paul that this study may help clarify. At this time in Christianity, there were faithful Jews who followed Jesus and there were Gentiles who followed Jesus. Paul is struggling with fellow Jewish believers who simply don’t see eye to eye with him about the requirements for Gentile believers.

In Modern times, how do you see what is required if we are followers of Jesus? Can Paul help us re-evaluate what it means to follow Jesus today?

Second Reading: I Corinthians 10:31—11:1
