The Pastor’s
Notes
In Graham Greene’s Collected Essays he wrote about the Jesuits in North America, the celebrated work by the American historian Francis Parkman (1823-1893). Greene quotes this passage: {Father} “Noel Chabenel came later to the mission for he did not reach Huron country until 1643. He detested the Indian life – the smoke, the vermin, the filthy food, the impossibility of privacy. He could not study by the smoky lodge fires, among the noisy crowd of men and women, with their dogs and their restless, screeching children. He had a natural inaptitude to learning the language, and labored at it for five years with scarcely a sign of progress. The devil whispered a suggestion in his ear: Let him procure his release from these barren and revolting toils and return to France where congenial and useful employments awaited him. Chabenel refused to listen: and when the temptation still bound him, he bound himself by a solemn vow to remain in Canada to the day of his death.”
“A solemn vow!” A voice is speaking to us from the past. This is a voice from the 17th century. What does it say to us now? Does this voice speak to our hearts as it did for Graham Greene?
We are thinking about a man who is miserable with his assignment in life. This man suffered from almost every aspect of the life he was living. He was not even personally able to be as useful as he might be elsewhere for lack of linguistic skill. His own self was in the way. Yet he makes a vow to stay in an unbearable situation.
What happened? He heard the voice of conscience speak. He went within and came to recognize that there was no one to replace him, with all his weaknesses, unhappiness and ineptitude. He just knew that to leave was to choose himself, his preferences, his comfort, over a people that he was sent to serve.
Graham Greene meditated on this little piece of history for a long time. He wrote that this man followed a voice of conscience that he feared we no longer possess. It is a good thing to allow this question to be raised in our own hearts. What is the source of our energy? What motivates us? Are we propelled by ambition, greed, selfishness, lust, anger, fear? Does conscience like that of Noel Chabenel exist anymore? Who among us is capable of giving him or herself over to a project that is intrinsically meaningful, but not at all pleasurable? Am I? Are you? Is there anyone? Let us pray!
We pray for the sick of the parish including:

EDUCATION & FAITH FORMATION
MINISTRIES
Faithful Citizenship
Our nation faces political challenges that demand urgent moral choices. We are a nation at war, with all of its human costs; a country often divided by race and ethnicity; a nation of immigrants struggling with immigration. We are an affluent society where too many live in poverty; part of a global community confronting terrorism and facing urgent threats to our environment; a culture built on families, where some now question the value of marriage and family life. We pride ourselves on supporting human rights, but we fail even to protect the fundamental right to life, especially for unborn children.
We bishops seek to help Catholics form their consciences in accordance with the truth, so they can make sound moral choices in addressing these challenges. We do not tell Catholics how to vote. The responsibility to make political choices rests with each person and his or her properly formed conscience.

CALLED TO PROCLAIM
B y R o b e r t M e l e v i n
Who Me?
Yes, I call—you—my chosen one;
I call—you—my mirror, my reflection;
I call—you—to proclaim the name above all others;
I call—you—to see, to serve, to love.
Do What?
Sow seeds, of my Word planted deep;
Open hearts, to the Word made flesh;
Speak truth, of the lover who dies for his beloved;
Live the story, as lovers and dreamers of a world reborn.
With Whom?
My Spirit, who sets hearts afire;
Teachers and companions, who journey to Emmaus;
Saints and heroes, who stand the test of timeless faith;
Popes and bishops, who authenticate and preserve.
And How?
Accept silence, let my Word speak;
Seek kinship, dare to be known;
Risk love, embrace the other;
Share Eucharist, be blessed and broken.
As who?
A humble footwasher
A risk taker
A wounded healer
A silent listener
A prophet for peace and justice
A faithful servant.
With what?
The fire of Sacred texts
The earth of Tradition
The wind of spoken eloquence
The ageless power which transforms.
And so?
Be my catechist!
Please call Barbara D’Arrigo at the Faith Formation Office, 201-265-3812, to be a Catechist and to echo the Word of God to the youth of the parish.

MINISTRIES OF
GOSPEL SERVICE
With Sincere Thanks
Please accept my sincere thanks for Our Lady of Visitation’s recent donation of three bike helmets and arts and crafts supplies to Children’s Aid and Family Services. The children in our PATH I & PATH II Group Homes will certainly benefit from your thoughtfulness. Thank you as well for OLV’s Athletic Department’s donation of two new car seats and a $20 gift certificate to ShopRite for a needy family in our Baby Basics program. Without thoughtful people like you, the Baby Basics program – which aids low-income families through the provision of diapers and formula – would not exist. You make it possible to provide the necessities every Baby and Toddler should have.
We believe every child and adult deserves to have hope, because with hope they see a future. Your congregation’s investment in our work on behalf of those we serve helps to ensure that reality – truly there are few investments with a better return. I thank you
Sincerely, Liz Mason
