The Legion of Mary
 

Origin: On September 5, 1921, a small group of lay people under the leadership of Frank Duff, met in Dublin, Ireland and placed themselves under the banner of the Mother of God. She took their offering of self and formed them into the Legion of Mary. Their number has grown to millions who, with Mary's help, developed greater holiness in their own lives and work throughout the world to bring Christ to all people. Frank duff and two of his members - cause are being considered for beatification (Edel Quinn & Alfie Lambe)
 
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR MEMBERSHIP:

Two Types of Membership:

I. Juniors  II. Seniors

I. Juniors: ages 12 - 18

Requirements:

  1. Regular attendance at weekly meetings.
  2. Performance of Apostolic work - serving Mass, arranging hymn books after Mass, organizing the mess left behind in the church. giving religious articles like rosaries, scapulars, and miraculous medals to people. They can also work with senior in going to nursing homes.

    Note: Right now, we are re-organizing our Juniors

II. Seniors: Ages 18 and up.

Two Types of Membership

  1. Active members - those who attend weekly and do active work like missionaries.
  2. Auxiliary members - Those who just pray the rosary and Legion Prayers daily, they are like contemplatives in the religious life.

Requirements of active members.

  1. Regular attendance at a weekly meeting.
  2. Daily recitation of Legion prayers (Catena).
  3. Performance of at least one apostolic work such as:
    1. Visiting the sick people in a hospital, nursing home or homes.
    2. Praying the Rosary in front of the abortion clinic.
    3. Praying the Rosary with the Veterans at the Veterans home.
    4. As a volunteer, by bringing patients on wheel chair from Mass and Adoration at the Bergen Regional Medical Center Chapel.
    5. Spreading family Rosary devotion by bringing our Lady's statue to one's home and pray the rosary with the family.
    6. be at the book borrow stand at the appointed time.

Note:

  1. Members work in pairs.
  2. members can choose any of the particular work mentioned whichever is most convenient for them, however he / she could do more depending on time and situation.

 

MEETING SCHEDULE:

(Choose one of the following)

Wednesday at 10:45 am in the Rectory.
Saturday at 6:00 pm in the Rectory.

The meeting begins with Rosary and Legion prayers.

Works done during the week are reported and new works are assigned for the following week.

SPECIAL ACTIVITIES:

  1. Spiritual: Attending yearly retreat, annual consecration of each members to our Mother and Queen, attending three Masses (Frank Duff, Edel Quinn and Mass for the departed members).
  2. Social: Annual reunion of members and their families (Christmas party) and yearly picnic of members and their families. 

MISSION STATEMENT:

We members of the Legion of Mary, with the permission of our pastor, Msgr. Joseph Slinger, work as apostles of Jesus and Mary under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, by prayer,
good works and by our example, to develop greater holiness in our lives and to bring Christ into our community and to all the people we can reach.
