Visitation  Academy students …

“We are called to act with justice,

we are called to love tenderly,

we are called to serve one another,

to walk humbly with our God.”

This is our resounding theme at Visitation Academy.  This message will be re-enforced during Morning Prayer, in the classroom and during Liturgy.  Please encourage your children to work on these attributes at home. Thus, we prepare our students for a way of life.

VISITATION ACADEMY HONORS POPE BENEDICT XVI

IN PREPARATION FOR   HIS TRIP TO THE UNITED STATES.

Visitation Academy pledged over two thousand hours of service hours in response to the invitation from the National Catholic Education Association (NCEA).  The Association called on schools, colleges, religious education programs and seminaries to participate in preparing a gift of public service to Pope Benedict for his birthday and in honor of his visit to the United States.

Service to the community is a core value of Catholic education and many Catholic schools incorporate a required service program within their curriculum or through their sacrament of Confirmation program.  Pope Benedict XVI promotes and exemplifies service to others and the NCEA found this project to be a fitting tribute to his holiness.

Among the projects pledged by the 287 students were the St. Jude’s math-a-thon which raised funds that benefited eighteen children in New Jersey one of whom was from their own county of Bergen.    Other projects included ecology projects around the school/parish grounds, letter writing to the military in Iraq and Afghanistan, preparing and sending “I care” packages to nursing homes and fundraising projects for the needy.  A significant project created by the intermediate students produced a chain with random acts of kindness completed by each student and recorded on a loop of the chain. (picture below)

At their weekly Eucharistic celebration, each student was presented with a commemorative booklet giving a brief  biography of his holiness, an explanation of his coat of arms and a schedule of events for his visit to Washington, DC and New York.

The students gained a greater appreciation for the Vatican and its leadership of the Roman Catholic Church.  These projects also stimulated an interest in the visit to the United States by the Pontiff.

Students continue their “Service Hour Pledge”

for Pope Benedict XVI….

“Walk Now for Autism” is an event assisting in finding a cure for Autism, the second most common developmental disorder in the U.S. Despite some promising discoveries, the cause for Autism is unknown and a cure does not exist. Research is critical.

Mr. Cestaro has pledged to raise $5,000 to help fund research.  Rebecca Cestaro, a fifth grade student will be walking on June 1st for Autism. To assist in this endeavor the Visitation Academy family donated $500 from Mission money. In addition grades five and six have pledged to raise another $500 towards this worthy cause. They already raised over $350 through Bake Sales and their own Walk-a-Thon.

In addition, grade five is supporting Ms. Fielder who walked on May 4th for a cure for MS.

Throughout the school year the Epic school, a school for children with Autism, located next to our school has brought several children to participate in art classes and outside recreation with our second grade students.  Our students serve as the perfect hosts and the children from the Epic School truly benefit from the experience.

Rebecca Starace and Julie LaFata, Class of 2005, are working on their Girl Scout Gold Award Project.  The Gold Award is the highest award a Girl Scout can receive.  Rebecca and Julie started as Daisy Girl Scouts in Kindergarten at Visitation Academy and have remained active in scouting for the last 12 years.

Rebecca is creating several mobile carts for children having surgery at Hackensack University Medical Center.  She is collecting new or gently used books, CD’s, DVD’s, GameBoy games, Leapster games, or Nintendo DS Games for all age groups, from infants through teenagers.

Julie is collecting new or gently used books for a library she is creating within the hospital for teenagers.

A bin will be set up by the School Office during the month of April.  Thank you.
